Black Soldier Fly Farming for food security, value chains and Services

Project.

Summary: The Black Soldier Fly project shall be located at Eco Woods Farm in Kinyamaseke community; to unlock the potential of smallholder farmers in rural and urban settings; promoting agriculture for Food Security, Waste Management, Organic Fertilizer and organic Animal Feeds.

The project shall provide an alternative source of organic fertilizer. Building on the national agenda to enhance agriculture exports, the derived organic fertilizers provide an alternative source of premium low-cost organic fertilizer that serves to enhance overall agricultural yields and production quality.

At the Eco Woods Farm we would like to establish a Black Soldier Fly Centre and Composting Facility to process waste into Animal Feed and Organic Fertilizer, with economic and environmental benefits. The community surrounding the centre stands to benefit greatly from black soldier fly farming to solve multiple problems they face, due to overpopulation, unemployment, urbanization, and climate change.

The inadequate management of organic waste observed in our communities has become a cause of water and air pollution and yields no valuable by-products such as protein, oil, or frass. Yet, the use of insects to manage organic waste has become a great protein potential and gained more attention to enhance farming in the past years.

The larvae of these insects, particularly BSFL, are voracious eaters of decaying organic matter; hence they have been successfully used to reduce waste streams including livestock (chicken, cow, swine, etc.) manure, human excreta, poultry slaughterhouse waste, mill by-products, food waste, fruits, and vegetable waste, as well as palm oil industry waste.
